I've been a faux finishing for many years, having taken many classes to pursue an expert level of finishing. I have used this book to do some Old World wall finishes, including faux stone and some varied applications of glaze and texture. This book is a keeper. I enjoy the resource section so that we can find the same products. Many times people substitute products for what they find cheaper in the big box hardware stores. I've made that mistake in the past and regretted it after being disappointed in the outcome or the application. I recommend this book for those who have some experience, or that you are ready to do your homework and practice to understand the way professionals and contractors use paint and tools. I am very pleased with this used book purchase
This is the one sourcebook that gives you a comprehensive overview of the techniques, equipment, and glaze recipes to get you on your journey to the land of faux. One could easily save the cost of the book in what you would end up paying for premixed glazes, when you can find recipes for oil and acrylic glazes that you can mix yourself from scratch. The savings here alone is worth the cost of the book. Many faux companies talk about glazes and tinting, but do not tell you that you can mix them yourself, wanting you to buy their pre-mixed products, which is unnecessary. This Bible of faux painting covers many textures and materials from marble to wood graining to gold leafing. The photos and step-by-step instruction make this a must have for anyone that wants to learn and understand what faux painting is all about. I highly recommend this book.
Outdated techniques. I sorry I purchased this book. No useful information at all unless you like to faux using complicated, labor-intensive old fashioned methods.
This book demonstrates so many methods of creating faux effects. It is well worth it price for the serious artist. I am just in awe and dazzled by what can be done to plain walls, floors, furniture and just about anything!
The book is a beautiful, inspirational compilation, if not a little overwhelming at first. Definitely for an artist or professional muralist. This is not for the inexperienced beginner looking to learn these techniques. Most projects assume you have a background in art - object placement, color use and blending, accomplished brush/tool techniques, shading knowledge, stone/marble creation & perspective. Also comes with a complete CD and gives the user permission to use his images.
This book is one of the best I've found on doing marble faux finishes and most techniques involve using acrylic rather than oil which is what I've seen in other books on the subject. Since oil paints and the products needed to use with them are toxic, as well as not being available in California this book is one of the most useful I've found available.
If you are really into painting this book is very cool. It gives you recipies and illustrations for many types of faux finishes. It doesn't just show you how to do wood. It explains the different cuts of wood, how they affect the grain patterns and then provides illustrated directions for about a dozen different exotic woods. Same with marble, semi-precious stone and many other materials.This is too much information for the beginner or the casual crafts person, but if you are the type of person who wants to know the difference between French and Italian faux finishes, this is the book. A comprehensive and in depth study. One of my painting bibles.
This book is for professionals who wish to specialize in high-end finishes (in other words, not the housewife who occassionally earns a little pocket cash doing sponge work on her neighbors' kitchen cabinets).The techniques covered are very challenging, take a lot of time to master and require a superior skill set. Those aspiring to, but not yet at such a level, should seriously consider using this book while taking a class with a qualified instructor (most will have to travel for this, as such instructors are not usually found at typical adult-ed programs). An intermediate-level artist trying to master these techniques from the book alone may end up frustrated.That said, this is a wonderful book. Both the writing and illustrations are clear and thorough. There is a good variety of topics covered. The asthetic quality of the projects is high. For those who do (or hope someday to do) high-quality work, this book is essential. I can't recommend it enough.
